Teachers@Work connects educators to businesses for a paid experiential learning opportunity that helps teachers create relevance between their classroom curriculum and the skill sets needed by local businesses, the future employers of their students. It does this by having teachers spend 3 to 5 days during their summer with a local company that’s in or close to their community.
The idea is to expose teachers to as many different aspects of the company as is appropriate – to let them see how finance, marketing, IT, legal, quality control – all of these different departments and divisions within the business work. It is not a job shadowing program, but interactive, immersive experience where teachers get to talk to and work side by side with both leaders in the company and regular employees to see what skills their students need for those jobs and to find out what skills the business sees as lacking in their new employees. The teachers then take what they learn and observe back to their classroom and integrate it into their curriculum. In the past, participating teachers learned important workplace skills and how to incorporate the development of these skills in their classroom. Past businesses have included BB&T, Biltmore Company, Biogen, Blockade Runner, Castlebranch, Catepillar, Fidelity, Gerber Collision, Lenovo, MCNC, Mission Health, Nucor Steel, Siemens Energy, and State Farm.
